First Focal Plane Explained.
What does First Focal Plane Mean?
In the First Focal Plane scopes, the reticle is located towards the front of the erector tube assembly (between the erector tube assembly and magnification lenses).
With the reticle in this position, one is able to look through the scope increasing and decreasing the reticle in size similar and exactly to the image or target being viewed. This results in clearer images and the ability to see the reticle crosshairs at all sizes simultaneously with the target.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Even at the highest magnifications Crosshairs are visible
- Subtensions are constant across all magnifications
Cons
- FFP reticles are associated with high-end scopes making them expensive
- Poor performance in low light conditions
- If the target is smaller, it hard to use the reticle at low magnification
Is First Focal Plane Better for Long Range?
With a First Focal Plane reticle, you are able to shoot faster and at longer distances. FFP reticles make it possible to transition between targets of varying distances with speed and precision.
