How Does Night Vision Work
Night Vision scopes feature an image intensifier tube, an eyepiece, an objective lens, and a power supply as the main parts.
The scope will gather light from the moon, stars, or infra-red light) through the front lens. This light is made up of photons that go into the photocathode tube changing them(photons) to electrons.
A chemical and electrical process occurs to amplify the electrons hurling them against the phosphorus screen to produce visible light seen through the eyepiece for clear images.
Night Vision Generations
Generation 1

Generation 2
This is majorly used by professionals such as those in law enforcement. A 2nd Generation scope is between $500 to $1000 costlier than a Gen 1 scope. Gen 2 features a micro-channel plate (MCP) placed behind the photocathode to amplify electrons.
MCP is made of short parallel glass tubes in their millions. When the electrons pass through them, more electrons are released for a brighter and sharper image than in Gen 1.
Generation 3
With Gen 3 there is an addition of a sensitive chemical, gallium arsenide to the photocathode for sharper and brighter images. The tube also features an additional ion barrier film for durability and longevity.
4th Generation
This is the best of the generations, in this Gen the ion barrier film and gating are removed for better detection, range, and resolution. This Gen uses an auto-gated power supply for a 100% improvement in photoresponse. There is also improved contrast and all light conditions making Gen 4 top of the line.
